New Queenstown Airport lights go on

Television weatherman and pilot Jim Hickey last night joined Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) chief executive Steve Sanderson and Jetstar Group chief executive Bruce Buchanan to officially "switch on" the $2 million runway lights at Queenstown Airport.

The the lights, which will be particularly helpful for aircraft not fitted with required navigation performance (RNP) technology, were installed in a joint venture between Airways New Zealand and QAC.

The 124 lights were intended to minimise disruptions and enhance safety in poor weather conditions.

"We hope that the lights open the door for airlines to seek approval to fully utilise our consented hours of 6am to 10pm," Mr Sanderson said.
