Plans for an "integral" part of the future Lake Hayes Estate community were announced yesterday, after a resource consent application was lodged with the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Lake Hayes Child Care Developments Ltd is behind the application for a new child-care centre within the Lake Hayes Estate community, between Frankton and Arrowtown.

The centre, which would cater for up to 50 children, would be built on a "key site" in Onslow St, opposite the proposed Lake Hayes Estate commercial area, owned by the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust.

Project spokesman Mike Smith said it had been driven by demand for child care in the area and the shortage of facilities in the resort was already "well documented".

"We believe, that because of the number of young families living at Lake Hayes Estate, a facility like this will be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood and we have had unqualified support from neighbours of the site and the local community in general."

The centre had been in the planning and design phase for the past 12 months and was expected to be "up and running" by the middle of next year.

It would operate from 7.30am to 6pm from Monday to Friday and would cater for children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years.

"It is great to have reached our first milestone having now lodged our application with Lakes Environmental for resource consent," Mr Smith said.

"We are thrilled to be involved in a project like this which will enhance the amenities at Lake Hayes Estate."

The complex was designed to blend in with the surrounding environment and residential character of the neighbourhood, with a "contemporary building" providing flexibility for teaching options.

Mr Smith said there would also be "excellent provision" for outdoor play areas, designed sensitively to avoid any potential conflict with the neighbourhood.

The central location would have a wide appeal and many families would be able to walk to the child-care centre.

There was also a pedestrian link to the reserve adjoining the Onslow St site.

"We are confident there is a significant need for the child-care centre and we are well aware from the response we have had, after discussions with local people, that the facility will fill a gap.

"It will undoubtedly become an integral part of the growing community at Lake Hayes Estate in the future."

Lake Hayes Community Association chairman Kevin Burdon said since the association began last year, one of the things members wanted most was a child-care centre in the area.

Lake Hayes Estate resident Jan Maxwell said it would be a wonderful addition to the community.

"Lake Hayes Estate has got such a large number of families with young children.

"Having a facility within walking distance for families is going to be wonderful," Mrs Maxwell said.
