The 150th anniversary of the arrival of pioneer settlers
William Gilbert Rees and Nicholas von Tunzelmann in
Queenstown was celebrated by about 100 Wakatipu heritage
enthusiasts over the weekend.
James Beech followed the costumed community festivities,
which included a marine salute, a re-enactment of the
explorers' horse trek from Frankton to the Queenstown
Gardens, a visit to the historic Frankton Marina boat shed
and ticket office, a Victorian-era cricket demonstration, an
official welcome at the gardens, an open day at the
Freemasons Lake Lodge of Ophir No 85, a dedicated heritage
centre and reception on Earl St and a memorial service at St
Peter's Anglican Church.
