Older boys still sought for `Oliver!'

It's not too late to audition for Showbiz Queenstown's upcoming season of Oliver! - provided you are an 11- or 12-year-old boy with an "unbroken voice".

Director Stephen Robertson said the major roles had all been cast - and all were keenly sought.

"Selecting a cast from the overwhelming wealth of talent took a lot longer than might normally be expected."

Almost 80 people auditioned for the cast of 13 principals, plus a 13-strong adult company and 12 to 15 children to play workhouse boys and Fagin's gang.

Nine people auditioned for the role of Nancy, five for Bill Sikes and five for Fagin.

Showbiz Queenstown secretary Hilary Finnie said Mr Robertson had some "very, very hard choices to make".

"Any one of the people auditioning for the parts could have performed it . . .

"There was a quality there [in auditions] that we haven't seen in a few years."

Showbiz Queenstown president Alex Derbie said the high turnout for auditions was a reflection of the interest in musical theatre in the Wakatipu "and the standing that Showbiz Queenstown has in the community".

While the adult roles were fully cast, there was room for more boys.

"We had a large number of very young children keen to be involved and would love to hear from any older pre-teen boys with unbroken voices who would like to be part of the show," Mr Derbie said.

The cast included many who performed in last year's musical, Les Misérables, but also introduced new faces to the Queenstown stage.

The role of Oliver will be played by Arrowtown School pupil Angus Reid (12), who made his debut with Showbiz Queenstown last year during its season of Les Misérables.

Oliver! will run from May 13-22 in the Memorial Hall, Queenstown.
