Banning campervans from car parks in the Queenstown CBD is being considered by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Mayor Clive Geddes told a group of more than 20 retailers and property owners discussing the Queenstown Town Centre Strategy the council was investigating whether the best use was being made of the resort's parking resources.

"On Earl St, we have bays for campervans.

"We have to ask the question: do we even want campervans in the centre of town?"Mr Geddes said other options included providing parking for people working in the resort, separate parking for visitors, and other parking for campervans."

The Queenstown Town Centre Strategy says the management of parking in the town centre would support the use of public transport and the council intended greater emphasis on short stay parking - less than four hours.

Changes to parking controls were being implemented gradually, with many linked to the introduction of improved passenger transport services.

Leased parking at the recreation ground and upper Ballarat St could be phased out - because of their "close proximity to the core of the town centre" - Brecon St was listed as "commuter parking" and Ballarat St is earmarked for "short stay" and campervan parking.

Athol St was also for short-stay parking, with potential for future use as a "transport hub", while Church St was short stay with opportunities for future overnight parking.

Boundary St was for commuter parking, with Man St for commuter and short stay parking.

The recreation ground was earmarked for visitor parking.

Campervan ban floated

Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to Clive and his team. I wholeheartedly agree that campervans should not be able to park in Queenstown. My reason? Every time we go to Queenstown and park my dear wife goes shopping and spends too much money. Clive's idea will be great, because we, along with all the other motorhomers and tourists, won't be able to go to Queenstown at all. Result? I save on running costs and on shopping, cafe, fuel and tourism attraction costs. Queenstown ends up with more parking and less annoying customers, and retailers are saved all that work of counting their takings. I wish Clive was our Mayor, he could empty the town out in no time flat, think of the peace. This is almost as good an idea as paying security double the amount being collected at the Wanaka launching ramp.Logical solution, don't charge or employ. QLDC solution, double the charge and "almost" break even.
