More than 130 people attended a quiz night at Arrowtown's
Athenaeum Hall on Wednesday, raising money for four Arrowtown
volunteer firefighters who will take on Auckland's Sky Tower in
May during the Firefighters Sky Tower Vertical Challenge.
Julie Hughes, of Arrow Events, said $5984 was raised during
the night, which featured 33 teams of four, before someone
donated $16 to make it a round $6000.
"[It] was very cool; people are so wonderful.
"The boys were very rapt with the night, with the total well
exceeding all our expectations."
In addition to several high-ticket items, including a signed
2009 All Blacks jersey, the four firefighters were also
auctioned off, individually and as a group.
Terry Youngman, Rob Andrews, John Hillock and Chris Tate all
went for a "great price", pledging four hours of their time
to the winning bidders.
The four men have been training for several months before the
gruelling climb, which will see them run up 51 flights of
more than 1100 stairs.
The event raises money for the Leukaemia and Blood
Foundation.
The Arrowtown brigade has sponsored the trip to Auckland, but
all money raised, including the $6000 on Wednesday night,
will go to the foundation.
