Top town showdown

The towns of Te Anau and Manapouri will face off in the Battle of the Lakes showdown to determine the champion of Fiordland, on September 13.

Two teams of 10 will compete at the Real Journeys Fiordland Community Events Centre, in Te Anau, in a mastermind quiz, tug of war, comedy and auctioneering contests, and a costumed lip-syncing grand finale. The winner takes the trophy and bragging rights.

The R18 evening will raise funds for the Manapouri Hall, Scouting Te Anau's den, The Key Playcentre and the Fiordland Rowing Club's new trailer and boats.

Members of Te Anau's Mighty Moose team will be led by George Batchelor, while opponents the Manapouri Mega-Mozzies are keen for an upset.

''We're not even the underdog - we're the bug underneath the underdog. You can't get lower and more annoying than a mozzie,'' team leader Johnny Templeton said.

The competition actually starts next Wednesday when both teams are allocated 200 tickets and the first one to sell out earns the first points.
