People heading to Treble Cone skifield and the Matukituki
Valley may experience more traffic delays as Queenstown Lakes
District Council staff and contractors work to stabilise a
cliff face at the Glendhu Bluffs.
An inspection has identified three significant rocks which
could be a hazard to road-users beneath a cliff face where a
rockslide closed access to the Matukituki Valley on Sunday.
QLDC infrastructure services general manager Mark Kunath said
the rocks would need to be removed.
About 10-20 tonnes of rock fell from the Glendhu Bluffs early
on Sunday blocking the access road to Treble Cone Ski Area
and the Matukituki Valley.
Abseiling contractors would remove the unstable rocks from
the bluffs above the road, Mr Kunath said.
The work will mean further traffic disruptions, today and
tomorrow, between 9.30am and 5pm, with expected closures of
up to half an hour.
"The road is still open - particularly for ski-area traffic -
but there will be some delays. We hope to keep those to a
minimum and [aim] to have the work completed quickly," he
said.
The council wants to complete the removal of the rocks within
two days, although ongoing minor delays are expected.
