Records fell in the
open men's, open women's and men's 60-plus age group
categories of the Southern Lakes Half Marathon (21.1km) race
in the Cardrona Valley on Saturday.
Former Dunedin runner Luke Hurring, now living in
Christchurch, wiped 5min off Adrian Bailey's record of 1hr
11min 31sec, finishing in 1hr 6min 18sec.
Second and third men's place-getters Oska Inkster-Baynes, of
Wanaka, and Kyle Barnes, of Auckland, also broke Bailey's
record, finishing in 1hr 8min 33sec and 1hr 9min 15sec.
Bailey, of Queenstown, finished fourth, 3min adrift of Barnes
in just over 1hr 12min.
Simone Maier, of Wanaka, reduced former record holder Merryn
Johnston's record by 17sec to finish in 1hr 22min 47sec.
Megan Balchin, of Dunedin, finished 2min later and just 20sec
in front of third place-getter Carol Maree, of Arrowtown.
Lorenz Kissling, an under-19 competitor from Wanaka, won the
10km run in 36min 23sec and was chased all the way by
national women's marathon champion Shireen Crumpton, of
Dunedin, who was second overall and won the open women's race
in 36min 47sec.
Peter Ruhen, of Dunedin, won the 60 years and over men's
category in a record 1hr 38min 12sec.
The fourth annual half-marathon and 10km run attracted its
biggest field yet of more than 200 entries.
