Increased traffic flows and road closures in Wanaka may have
created frustrations for some local residents, but a traffic
management plan for the Challenge Wanaka triathlon is holding
up well, a council traffic warden says.
The majority of car owners and motorists were to be commended
for sticking to Wanaka's parking rules, despite the closure
of some of the town's main roads, Lakes Environmental traffic
officer Daryl Taylor said.
A traffic management plan put in place by the organisers of
Challenge Wanaka was "going OK" and was flexible enough to
allow for "some tweaks" if needed, Mr Taylor said.
Road closures along Ardmore St, on Wanaka's lakefront, and
altered traffic flows around Pembroke Park were in place
yesterday for an afternoon schedule of short triathlons for
the Contact Tri Series.
While there had been a "few hiccups" with increased traffic
flows, there had not been any increase in parking
infringement notices issued for illegally parked vehicles, Mr
Taylor said.
Constable Peter Reed said a narrowed Brownston St - where
traffic cones were marking part of yesterday's triathlon bike
course - had contributed to a road accident.
A parked car was hit by a truck after one of the car's
occupants opened a door while the truck was driving past,
Const Reed said.
The accident had blocked traffic for a short time.
The occupants of the two vehicles were not injured, he said.
