Teens hurt in booze-fuelled brawl

A brawl which erupted between Wanaka and Alexandra youths - and resulted in two teenagers needing hospital treatment - was fuelled by alcohol, police say.

Two teenage boys, both of Alexandra, needed medical treatment for injuries sustained during a fight between two groups of youths at the Wanaka skateboard park on Saturday afternoon.

Constable Sean Hurley said one boy was knocked unconscious, while another had his nose "busted" in the brawl.

Police issued two infringement notices to minors for drinking in a public place after the incident, he said.

Several carloads of intoxicated Alexandra youths had showed up at the Wanaka skateboard bowl at Pembroke Park, Const Hurley said.

"Basically, the Wanaka kids didn't want them on their turf."

Wanaka police had identified an alleged offender, who would be spoken to by youth aid about the alleged assaults, Const Hurley said.

He would not say where the alleged offender was from.

Several of the Alexandra youths were spoken to about the excessive amounts of alcohol they had with them in cars.

Such incidents reinforced calls from police for a 24-hour liquor ban in Wanaka's central areas, he said.
