A horse fell down a bank into a culvert near Lake Hawea
about 4.30pm yesterday, briefly trapping its rider underneath.
Holly Hale, of Lake Hawea, and her horse received minor
injuries.
Firefighter Nick Davis said it appeared the edge of the road
had collapsed under the horse's feet.
Road slumps are common on Timaru River Rd and signs warn of
the possibility.
The fire brigade lifted the horse from Miss Hale using ropes,
a crowbar and blankets.
Mr Davis said the horse remained remarkably calm in the
confined space.
Wanaka St John ambulance officers treated Miss Hale for a
sore leg.
Miss Hale and her horse were both able to walk after the
accident.
The horse would be checked by a veterinarian.
Miss Hale declined to comment.
