A proposal to cut the speed limit in Seacliff is among 46
limit changes proposed by the Dunedin City Council.
Changes include cutting Riccarton Rd's limit from 100kmh to
80kmh between School and Tirohanga Rds; Cemetery Rd's 100kmh
limit to 50kmh; Three Mile Hill Rd, 165m west of Dalziel Rd
to Silverstream Valley Rd, from 100kmh to 80kmh; Kaikorai
Valley Rd's 70kmh to 50kmh; and five roads at Osborne from
100kmh to 50kmh.
About half the proposals recommend speed increases, including
Cowan Rd's western end to 680m east of Pine Hill Rd from
50kmh to 100kmh; and Mount Cargill Rd, from 50kmh to 80kmh.
Community boards will consider the proposals before they are
put out for wider public consultation.
Waikouaiti Coast Community Board member and Coast Rd resident
Nancy Higgins was disappointed the council had not
recommended a 70kmh speed limit for the Coast Rd. The
proposals go before the board today.
Instead, parts of Coast Rd would go to 80kmh, from 100kmh,
while Seacliff would decrease from 100kmh to 70kmh.
One portion of Coast Rd, 400m north of Dunnet St to 250m
north of Dunnet St, would increase from 50kmh to 80kmh.
Dr Higgins said the whole road should be 70kmh. Motorists
often underestimated the road's curves and bends. A uniform
speed limit would eliminate confusion and could help curb the
area's boy-racer problem.
Council senior traffic engineer Bruce Conaghan said the area
was not built up enough to warrant 70kmh all the way.
