Security of Warrington to be discussed

The security of the Warrington domain is to be discussed with local people, following a series of incidents there, including the terrorising of two people in a campervan.

The most recent incidents occurred on May 7 and 13 when up to 20 "boy racer" vehicles congregated in the reserve, damaging the grass area by the playground, Dunedin City Council Parks and reserves team leader Martin Thompson said in a report to the Waikouaiti-Coast community board meeting at Waikouaiti last Wednesday.

Twenty-one incidents had been reported to the police over the past 10 years, Officer in charge of the Waikouaiti police Constable Jon-Paul Tremain told the meeting.

He said it was the last reserve in Dunedin not to be gated.

It was a question of what people would accept, Waikouaiti Coast Community Board deputy chairwoman Geraldine Tait, of Warrington, said.

She was not downplaying the severity of some of the incidents but said people liked to be able to walk their dogs there.

The reserve covered a big area and had several entrances, she said.

The board resolved that chairman Alisdair Morrison and Mrs Tait would liaise with residents to seek a solution to the security problem at the domain.
