$46,000 top price for stag

A top price of $46,000 was achieved at Foveran Deer Park's recent 30th elite sire stag sale and commercial sire stag and trophy sale in the Hakataramea Valley.

The 2-year-old son of Morpheus, out of a Prince Philip hind, was bought by Southern Deer. With a 31-point antler, it was described in the catalogue as having one of the best heads of the sale.

A 3-year-old son of Charlie Mac, out of a Motdonis hind, was bought by Malcolm Cane, from Reporoa, for $24,5000, while R. P. and P. M. Ponsonby, from Waimate, bought a son of Woody, out of a Hannibal hind, for $17,000.

There were 72 registered buyers from throughout New Zealand, including some flown in by helicopter.

In the elite sire stag sale, there were 22 3-year-olds offered, 39 2-year-olds and four yearlings, mostly bred from the park's ET breeding programme. There were 57 stags offered in the commercial sire stag and trophy sale, which ranged in price from $1500 to $4500.
