Building up to 'Olympics' of horticultural science

Planning is well under way for the 29th International Horticultural Congress to be held in Brisbane in August.

Plant and Food Research Ltd liaison scientist and team leader Jill Stanley, of the Clyde Research Centre, is the vice-president in charge of organising the scientific programme for the congress.

The event is being hosted by the Australian Society of Horticultural Science, the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Science and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science.

The theme will be ''Sustaining lives, livelihoods and landscapes''.

Mrs Stanley said more than 2500 delegates were expected from throughout the world to attend about 50 symposia.

''It is getting pretty exciting,'' Mrs Stanley said.

''It is the Olympics of horticultural science.

''The call for abstracts is about to close and we have received 1200 already but we expect that to at least double by closing date this week.''

Most of the keynote and plenary speakers have been booked while planning for the symposia is well under way.

She was keen to see growers take the opportunity to attend the event.

''They will get a lot out of it.''

Early bird registration opens on February 17.
