Completion of stadium just weeks away

Waimate's new purpose-built stadium is about three weeks away from completion.

The stadium has been a work-in-progress throughout the year but, all going to plan, will be finished in the coming weeks.

Warren White, who is overseeing the building's progress, said, as of late last week, painting and vinyl flooring had yet to be done.

The stadium started taking shape after the Waimate Shears' former venue - the Waimate Stadium, where the event had been hosted for 40 years - was redeveloped into the new Waimate District Community Complex.

However, the amenities planned for the complex were not suited to the shearing competition, prompting the development of a new stadium.

Mr White, who is the Waimate New Zealand Spring Shears president, said the new stadium had been a work-in-progress for about two years, so it was good to see it finally nearing completion.

The fully insulated building, which is 900sq m, features toilet and shower facilities, a bar area, kitchen, dining room and barbecue area.

The stadium will be available for a range of groups to use for various purposes.

One of the first events being planned for the new stadium is a Rotary Club of Waimate fundraiser, being held on July 29 in conjunction with the Southern Canterbury A&P Association and Waimate New Zealand Shears. It will feature an Argentinian barbecue and auction.

A range of items would be up for auction, including a weekend at a crib.

Anyone who wants to contribute an item to the cause can contact organisers via the Waimate New Zealand Spring Shears Facebook page.
