Mohair NZ aims to raise profile

Mohair New Zealand (MNZ) is to use its voluntary 2% levy to employ a public relations company to both encourage more farmers into the industry and raise its profile.

MNZ chairman John Woodward said two public relations companies had submitted proposals and decisions about selection and finalising contracts were now being made.

He said the successful company would generate good-news stories, including profiles of breeders, research and the recent 10% increase on the latest fibre sales results.

There had been some discussion at the recent Federated Farmers NZGoats conference in Queenstown about introducing a levy for goat meat.

He said it would be necessary to consult all growers before moving ahead with the proposal.

''We see a disjointed industry but we have got contact with everybody [involved].''

He said MNZ was happy to support any initiative and a proposal would be presented to groups at next year's conference.

''We are not thinking of a time line, more probably a wish list.

''We can't rush these things.''
