National successes for reporter and newspaper

Southern Rural Life and reporter Yvonne O'Hara were recognised with awards at the New Zealand Community Newspapers' Conference in Wellington at the weekend.

Southern Rural Life was named joint winner of the Best All Round Newspaper (associate category). The award, for non-weekly newspapers, was shared with Coast & Country, from the Bay of Plenty.

Ms O'Hara was awarded Best Senior Journalist (associate).

Allied Press communities editor Craig Page said the awards illustrated how highly Ms O'Hara and Southern Rural Life were regarded in the rural community.

''I am thrilled for Yvonne. She is an experienced, respected journalist who provides strong and interesting stories.

''Being named best newspaper is a tribute to all staff involved in the production of Southern Rural Life.''

Allied Press had further success at the conference.

The Star in Dunedin was named Best All Round Newspaper in the 20,000 plus circulation category. It also won the Best Front Page award.

Ashburton Courier was named Community Newspaper of the Year and Best All Round Newspaper in the 7500 to 20,000 circulation category. It also won the Best Advertising Portfolio in that category.

The News, North Canterbury, was named Most Improved Newspaper in the 20,000 plus category.
