Woolhandlers will be in with the chance to pocket $1000 when the Waimate Shears returns to the district for its 50th anniversary.

The event, taking place in mid-October, will feature a range of events, including a woolhandlers category, with a 1000 prize for first place in a fleece-throw competition.

In previous years, woolhandlers have paid a $5 entry fee, with the winner "taking all", Waimate Shears president Warren White said.

The category is one of just many to feature in this year’s celebration, which will take place from the event’s new purpose-built pavilion for the first time. Mr White said there was plenty for people to look forward to — both competitors and the general public.

Celebrations will start with a dinner on October 12, followed by a woolhandling team event and major speed shear on October 13.

A few entries have already been received for an elite speed shear competition, which is by invitation. The winner will take home $2500, while the runner-up will get $1250.

Intermediate blade shearers are also encouraged to sharpen their tools for the celebrations, a category that was taken out of the line-up about eight years ago, due to a lack of numbers.

However, the 50th anniversary was a perfect reason to bring it back for old times’ sake.

And, if time allows, organisers want to add a clean shear  category for intermediate and junior shearers, Mr White said.

A transtasman blade test will also see New Zealand and Australia go head-to-head on October 14.

The Waimate Shears will feature an overall prize draw of about $10,000.

Waimate Shears’ main speed shear event will also take place on October 14, as part of the PGG Wrightson competition circuit.
