Reuben Carter has qualified for his seventh Young Farmers Contest regional final.

The Christchurch City YFC member won the Christchurch district contest at Scottswood Farm, Hororata, on Saturday, October 5, to qualify for the Tasman regional final in 2014 ANZ Young Farmer Contest.

It will be Mr Carter's fourth successive appearance in the Tasman region final, after three appearances in the Northland region final. He won the Tasman final earlier this year for his first appearance in the grand final, in May. Mr Carter will be joined by Lincoln YFC member Caleb Strowger and Dunsandel club member Sarah O'Connell in the Tasman final at the Murchison A&P Show on February 15.

Ms O'Connell previously competed in the Tasman final in 2011, while Mr Strowger qualified for the 2012 regional final. The Christchurch contest was the first of 24 district finals being held throughout the country. Place-getters progress to one of seven regional finals to be held from February to April. The grand final will be held in Christchurch from July 3-5 next year.

The 46th Young Farmer Contest was officially launched at the Commodore Hotel in Christchurch on October 4. Tim Van de Molen, the 2013 champion, said the prizes on offer for this year's contest was ''a great recognition of support for the primary industry''.

''The great thing about the contest is learning about new things and getting out of your comfort zone. You would never push yourself to do these things if it were not for the contest.''

Hurunui YFC member James Hoban won the North Canterbury district contest at Glenmark on Saturday and he will be joined by Charles Douglas-Clifford, also of Hurunui, in the Tasman region final.
