Hayward was originally developed from the old Queen Mary Maternity hospital in 1992 and the brief for the project team, led by Logic Group, was to refresh the hall of residence during the 2018 university summer break.

Time was tight, and demolition started less than three months before 174 students were scheduled to move in.
