NZ Post expects Black Friday bonanza

New Zealand Post is expecting one of the busiest weeks of the year, following Black Friday online sales.

Its general manager of business marketing, Chris Wong, said while the sales began in the United States, many New Zealand companies had jumped on board.

''Black Friday, on November 23, was now one of the biggest single shopping days of the year, up there with China's Singles Day, November 11, and the US' Cyber Monday on November 26.

''Our experience shows us that a few days after these sales, we start to see huge volumes of parcels coming through our network.''

He said that between 2014 and 2017, the annual parcel volume sent through NZ Post increased by 21% but the average volume for November alone rose almost 50% thanks to Singles Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

And while Black Friday was originally a single day of ''bricks and mortar'' shop sales, it had spread out over a week and included online sales all around the world.

NZ Post's e-commerce report released earlier this year showed New Zealanders' online spending with domestic retailers had increased 9%, 10 times the rate of local bricks and mortar retail.
