A business capability database, listing 207 Southland-based companies, has been launched to assist with the rebuilding of Christchurch.
The Southland Supply Initiative, spearheaded by Venture Southland, was put forward as a way in which labour, products and services from the region would be utilised in the construction.
The online portal sets out the businesses' background information and allows additional businesses to register interest to become involved in the project.
The database highlighted Southland-based business capacity to project managers and contractors seeking to provide services in Christchurch, Venture Southland chief executive officer Paul Casson said.
Venture Southland recently engaged with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise's Industry Capability Network, local government and project management companies in Christchurch to provide updates on the initiative.
Last year, Mr Casson attended a Collaborate Canterbury event facilitated by the Canterbury Development Corporation and Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce.
Using those connections, the database would be promoted to all relevant people, organisations and businesses in Canterbury to ensure they were informed of ''Southland's potential''.
Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend welcomed the initiative, saying the scale of the rebuilding required using resources outside the city to assist.
