Congestion of Cumberland St in Dunedin has eased after road works caused traffic to back up this afternoon.

The NZ Transport Agency said traffic was flowing smoothly in the area now that the road works have been completed

Earlier today motorists were told to expect delays and an increase in traffic as maintenance was conducted on a one-way in central Dunedin.

Vehicles were backed up along Cumberland St (SH1) as they headed north.

NZTA said the cause of the delays and traffic was due to "unplanned service maintenance" which had resulted in the closure of one of the lanes.

A motorist who was stuck in traffic said they ended up sitting through a whole cycle of green lights before being able to get through the intersection.

Traffic was also impacting motorists heading south.

Another motorist who was driving south on the one way said that it took 20 minutes to get from the Dunedin Botanic Garden to Albany St.

"There was no escape as Dundas St is blocked off because they are still working on the bridge," he said.

Not the first time we had this happen. The way the city is organised is mostly controlled by the DCC because even on SH 1 the rest of the traffic flow whether made fluid by the City Council or not affects all the traffic flow.

Quicker by bus.
