The Queenstown Lakes District Council is still waiting for "formal confirmation" of government funding for freedom camping facilities this summer.

The council has applied to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's responsible camping fund.

Last year it received $530,000, which it used to provide free sites and facilities for "certified self-contained campers" - upsetting operators of commercial camping grounds.

The council has declined to reveal what plans are being made for this summer.

Tourism Minster Kelvin Davis announced in May $8million was being made available to "continue delivering a better freedom camping system".

It would be used for "education and ambassador programmes, enforcement activity and the provision of temporary facilities".

They are not freedom camping facilities if we pay for the tourists to camp.. they are paid camping facilities that we, the rate and tax payers pay for, and why? What about all the struggle;ing camping grounds? What the hell is going on? WE DONT NEED FREEDOM CAMPING! It should be for New Zealand Passport holders only
