More public toilets — including accessible toilets — could become a reality for Dunedin, after the Dunedin City Council requested a report investigating the cost for inclusion its long-term plan.
At annual plan deliberations yesterday, councillors addressed a request from the Disabled Persons Assembly and the Donald Beasley Institute for construction of a changing places accessible bathroom — a bathroom with facilities for toileting, changing or showering.
The council received 12 submissions in support of the bathroom request, which was estimated to cost $280,000 new or $150,000 to convert an existing facility.
Cr Christine Garey said as long as she had been in the council, public toilets had been on the agenda, and a need for more was clear.
"I think it’s well past time we get some."
All councillors were in favour of a report being produced by December 2020 for inclusion in its 10-year-plan.
Cr Jim O’Malley said it would be good to have the bathrooms constructed by local builders, and "kept local".
