A man was tracked into bush and bitten by a police dog after a pursuit in Dunedin.

A police spokeswoman said officers attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle on Leckhampton Court, Clyde Hill, at 6.10am yesterday.

The car failed to stop and a short pursuit began. Police then found the car abandoned.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said the man, who had three warrants to arrest, was tracked by police dogs into bush and gorse and bitten by one of them.

The car turned out to have been stolen, Sgt Dinnissen said.

The 33-year-old man will appear in the Dunedin District Court today on charges of breaching bail, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.
