A contract for preliminary design work and the indicative business case for a major Dunedin streets redevelopment project has been awarded, the Dunedin City Council says.

Engineering firm Aecom has been engaged to provide decision-makers with an early indication of the preferred way forward for the council’s "tertiary project".

The firm will not only investigate improvements in priority areas Union St East, Clyde St, Harbour Tce and Albany St, but also underground stormwater and wastewater pipe renewal, the council’s latest transport activity report says.

Aecom has also been involved in the George St redevelopment.

The tertiary project, planned together with the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic, was recently awarded NZ Transport Agency innovating streets for people funding.

In Union St East, that funding would allow for a redevelopment to reprioritise how the street was used so there was more space for the large numbers of pedestrians who used it daily to move between lectures and meetings.

Those steps would cost $300,000 in total; the city council’s share would be $30,000, the Otago Daily Times reported in June.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
There is no reason this needs to be controversial because the area is dominated by the Uni and Poly, provided there is provision for parking for those that need to travel to sporting events around Logan Park and those that work in the area.
Also staff parking for tertiary workers has been a persistent issue for decades.

"...reprioritise how the street was used so there was more space for the large numbers of pedestrians".
In other words, how DCC can close another road in their pathetic attempt to rid Dunedin of cars and trucks. Just another $300,000 being splashed away on Green dreams.

I will bet that the use of Union St for any purpose other than local pedestrian use will be not be considered. Where will the current Union St traffic go?
