A sculpture depicting a doorway to different dimensions is being installed in the Octagon today.

The artwork was craned into place under the watchful eye of a PW Engineering employee.

Ko te Tūhono, by Ayesha Green, is a cast aluminium replica of the doorway into Ōtākou's wharenui Tamatea.

"It is a passage to our landscape, our life and the wairua we share with the harbour," Ms Green has said.

"When you move through Ko te Tūhono, you are inside and outside, you are coming and going. As a monument to our tipuna and our tamariki, Ko te Tūhono transcends time and space."

Someone's been watching too many episodes of Stargate.

It would be fascinating to understand the technology that enables the transmutation from one dimension to another? Perhaps DCC could be persuaded to step through it and be transported to a new reality. Whatever, I am not sure it has been prudent use of ratepayers money ($100000+) during these hard times?

Everything makes sense! DCC are from another dimension where nothing makes sense! Stepping through the portal could take them back to Absurdistan. Let’s do it now and save Dunedin!

Should be good for anyone wanting to practice their football skills but it would be of more use on a nicely grassed reserve. Another example of wasting ratepayers money by a profligate council.

Had a look a moment ago...stunning and long overdue.
An excellent timely addition to the Octagon.

I partly agree: Someone's been watching too many episodes of Stargate.

On a more serious note the gateway is real to some Maori and it is spiritual, hence the comment "It is a passage to our landscape, our life and the wairua we share..." There are ways and means of getting into spiritual realms and this is seen as one way.
My comment is that while I would like to see a cross as prominent right in the Octagon I would be unlikely to get such a desire met. I also understand that the resurgence of the Maori spiritual life is the reason.

And in time it will join the underground toilet, Star Fountain, & chess game far away in the mists of time.
What's next.....

Miharo! Ka rawe! A wonderful and uplifting taonga by a talented wahine which will give joy to many people for a very long time.

Good Idea but I would think where the teeth on Portsmouth drive would be the right place and relocate the teeth.

Its a shame it was made of a casting of aluminium instead of be carved from wood from our local iwi master carver
