Family fun

Dunedin City Library, 230 Moray Pl. Every Wednesday 10.30am, story time. Until Monday, January 10: 2011 Robert Burns poetry competition. Write a poem in English or Scots, inspired by the life or works of Robert Burns. Your chance to be published by the Otago Daily Times. Free entry. Dunedin Public Art Gallery, the Octagon. From December 27 until January 30: "A World with Chocolate - Summer Chocolate Hunt". Free, bookings not required and suitable for all ages. Children 7 years and under will require assistance and must be supervised. Wednesday January 12, 11.15am: Tours for Tots. Parents and caregivers: take part in a free baby-friendly half-hour tour of an exhibition at the gallery followed by a chat and a cup of tea on the mezzanine floor. Nappy-changing facilities.

Otago Museum, 419 Great King St. Explorer backpacks for children aged 7 to 12, free. Guided tours daily at 11.30am and 3.30pm. Meet at the information desk. Daily during the school holidays: "The Great Face Farce Detective Trail". A dastardly hoax has occurred and there are some pretty guilty-looking faces around. Pick up a Detective Conan's trail and follow the clues to figure out whodunnit. Collect your trail from the search centre desk. Free. Daily during the school holidays, 3.30pm, atrium level 1: "Survival of the Fittest". Find out what makes the stoat such an efficient killing machine and what anti-predator adaptations rabbits possess to aid their survival. Daily until Christmas Eve, 10am-4pm: "Christmas Comes To Animal Attic" - face-painting, stories, activities and Santa.

Visitor Information Centre, Octagon. Daily, 11am: Walk Dunedin, inner-city walking tours. Meet at the visitor centre.

Music and performance

Cromwell Country Music Club, Town & Country Club, Melmore Tce, Cromwell. January 2, noon-6pm: annual gala and talent quest on the lawn. Guest artist: Cromwell's Craig Adams. Reg McTaggart and his Kawarau Country band will provide backing. Free. Bring a chair.
