The feats of the groundbreaking pilot are among many documented in author Kira Cochrane’s Modern Women: 52 Pioneers (published by Frances Lincoln).

It celebrates suffragettes, scientists, activists, artists, politicians, writers and other women who have sought gender equality in their own way.

Born in Kansas on July 24, 1897, Earhart made several notable flights, including becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928.
