Film funding for Murphy

The son of the director of classic New Zealand movie Goodbye Pork Pie has gained New Zealand Film Commission funding to finish his first feature film.

Wellington-based director Paul Murphy, son of director Geoff Murphy, has gained post-production funding from the commission.

The film, Second Hand Wedding, was written by Nick Ward and based on a true story. It tells of a woman who is engaged but is trying to keep her wedding a secret from her bargain-hunting mother - for fear she will ruin her big day.

The film gained funding from the commission after it was shown a rough cut, which had been filmed in four weeks.

The post-production work is now under way at Peter Jackson's Miramar Studios.

Commission chief executive officer Ruth Harley said when she saw the film she laughed and cried in all the right places.

She said the film had terrific appeal and was the kind of movie New Zealanders would enjoy seeing on the big screen.

Mr Murphy said the funding would give the film a finish of the highest possible standard. It would be released in cinemas this year he said.
