Incredibles sequel not much of a stretch

Christine Powley reviews the sequel to the Incredibles.

It has been 14 years since The Incredibles and, in all honestly, I have not been hanging out for more of them.

My dim memories are of great-looking animation teamed with a lacklustre plot.

The Incredibles 2 (Rialto and Reading) is pretty much more of the same. Interestingly, they avoid the question of what the super-hero family has been up to by starting the movie right where the last one left off.

The newly-bonded family set off to save the city from an evil-doer and, just like in the first one, it is as much of a disaster as a triumph.

What the family needs is a good PR team and, luckily for them, one turns up in the form of a billionaire, who is crazy about superheroes.

In a supposedly hilarious plot twist, Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) is chosen to be the face of super-heroes and Mr Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) has to sit tight and look after the kids. That is the sort of thing that would have had us rolling in the isles 30 years ago.  What a mind bender.

Oddly, I found myself unmoved by this wacky premise and the shock revelation that looking after a baby, a hyperactive boy and a moody teenage girl is hard work also failed to surprise.

Anyway, Elastigirl is soon on the trail of a new villain and, competent as she is, it turns out she needs the aid of her family to really sort things out.
