Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens will co-write Mortal Engines, a sci-fi novel series by Philip Reeve, Variety reports.

However, Jackson will not direct the film. That task has been given to first-timer Christian Rivers, a long-time collaborater of Jackson's.

"The combination of emotion and jaw-dropping visuals in Mortal Engines makes this the perfect movie for his move into feature directing," Jackson told Variety.

"What Christian intends to do with Philip Reeve's terrific story is going to result in an original and spectacular movie. I wish I could see it tomorrow."

Four books have been written in Reeve's sci-fi series, and Rivers' film is intended to be the first in a series.

The story is set in the future, Variety reported, in a world where "cities roam the globe on huge wheels, devouring each other in a struggle for ever diminishing resources".

It's the first film project confirmed by Jackson since The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies was released in 2014.
