Toe-tapping talent show

Back in the days of black-and-white movies, Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland were always getting their pals together and putting on a show, and when it comes to children’s entertainment, plots have hardly moved on.

Sing (Rialto and Reading) is set in a world of anthropomorphic animals. Our sort-of hero is Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), a koala desperately trying to keep his theatre from going under.

In one last throw of the dice, he decides to hold a talent show to save the theatre. His creditors are unimpressed, but soon every animal in the city with dreams of stardom is queuing to audition. There is Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), an unappreciated mother of 20 piglets who would like something to be about her for once,  Mike (Seth MacFarlane), an overconfident mouse, Johnny (Taron Egerton), a young gorilla whose father is tutoring him in the family business of bank robbery, Ash (Scarlett Johansson), a porcupine who sings backup in a band, and  Meena (Tori Kelly), an elephant with a stunning voice who is too shy to sing in public.

Can this bunch of misfits come through for Moon?
