CD review: Dan Deacon

This fourth full-length album from Dan Deacon finds him placing more of himself in the mix than on previous outings.

Contributing vocals to five of the eight wildly idiosyncratic tracks, Deacon delivers a Bongwater-meets-Tortoise mash-up of wordy fantasy narratives over multilayered instrumental backgrounds, manipulating his voice to various man/woman/robot settings and creating a sense of significant scale.

From dreamy opener Feel The Lightning to the frantically propulsive Sheathed Wings and slow-wave instrumental closer Steely Blues, Deacon is in command of an epic piece of electronic pop that covers a lot of ground.
