CD review: Drake

Whatever it is, Drake’s new "musical project" sees him leave 2016’s overblown Views behind in a Yeezy-like burst of creativity, where the idea of "the album" is reconfigured for the streaming generation.

The set deftly moves between dancehall, grime, sinuous R&B and stirring afrobeat (the triumvirate of Passionfruit, Get It Together and Madiba Riddim is especially beguiling), with his trademark woozy nocturnal atmospherics still in tact, as on the exquisite Since Way Back.

For all the enigma surrounding the release, this is the sound of an artist thrillingly pushing forward.
