Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow takes a deliberate, distancing step from his largely acoustic 2010 debut Early In The Morning, opting this time to set his smoky falsetto against electronic instruments, strings and synthetic beats.

The move places him in the same stark world as Bon Iver's Justin Vernon circa For Emma, Forever Ago but with a soulful approach that sets the temperature gauge on defrost.

Seldom does he or his self-replicating backing choir drop into the kind of earthly register that might provide contrast, but the overall effect is pleasantly sedating.
