CD reviews: Anohni

Formerly known as Antony Hegarty, transsexual musician Anohni's most recent metamorphosis has been from intimate chamber-pop explorer to political protester via electronic dance anthems.

The targets of Anohni's soulful delivery are many: from drone-strike foreign policy to global ecological meltdown.

Yet despite the album's title, Hopelessness manages to inject light in some unexpected places; take Anohni's rumination on the theme of execution, which is juxtaposed against a pulsing, angular sonic backdrop, suggesting an element of hope that the idea of ultimate punishment may one day fade.

 Anohni. Hopelessness. Rough Trade.
