CD reviews: Blondie

John Congleton, the Grammy-winning producer behind Franz Ferdinand, St Vincent and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, apparently went back to basics, opting for a live approach when recording the 11th album by New York veterans Blondie.

Comprising core songwriting team Debbie Harry (vocals) and Chris Stein (guitar) along with drummer Clem Burke and a few newbies, they have dispensed with the heavy sequencing of their more recent efforts.

The result is lots of guitar, big pop tunes and propulsive, clap-along, bar-band rhythms, albeit with more than a few echoes of the garage-scuzz-meets-disco vibe that worked so well for them in the late ’70s.
