CD reviews: Blue Man Group

An award-winning global entertainment company, better known for its stage productions around the world than its 10 studio albums, the Blue Man trio has released a propulsive, tight collection of 14 instrumentals that reflect the urgent, urban energy of its Manhattan base.

Here long-time friends Chris Wink, Phil Stanton and Matt Goldman play with helter-skelter rhythms (sometimes electronic, sometimes acoustic, sometimes both) on which sit washes of guitar and synthesiser.

Thankfully, this group knows how to pare things back, tracks such as Alive and Snorkelbone allowing a little light to fall between the often gargantuan textural structures.
