CD reviews: Both Sides of the Line

From the surf-flecked shores of California to the echo-laden Sun Studios, Dunedin outfit Both Sides of the Line’s sophomore album roams through a range of guitar-driven tunes that highlight the slick playing of key songwriter John Sule, yet also show a band that has grown in confidence since its 2013 full-length debut.

This is evident in its willingness to mix up the largely mid-tempo material with darker themes that evoke a late-night jazz club, epitomised by Glenda Rogers’ smoky vocals on Willing to sell my soul.
