CD reviews: Bruce Springsteen

Intended as a companion piece to Bruce Springsteen’s recent autobiography Born To Run, Chapter and Verse is probably destined for the shelf of the hardcore fan, yet it is an interesting enough document of the New Jersey troubadour’s more ragged edges.

It is also a reminder of his songwriting craft and class, from his teen band’s fascination with rhythm and blues (Baby I and You Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover), to social commentaries (Growin’ Up and Henry Boy), to in-your-face treble guitar squall and funk-stomp (He’s Guilty), to the album’s second half, which features better known material (Born To Run, The River, The Ghost of Tom Joad).
