CD reviews: Coldplay

What would the world not have if Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland hadn't met at university?

Chimey effect-laden guitars and Martin's forlorn wail, the heart of the Coldplay sound and pretty much what A Head Full of Dreams is overflowing with.

Noticeably more upbeat than last year's maudlin Ghost Stories, the group's seventh album is turgid tedium for the most part.

If you like this type of thing then fair play, but it's a safe bet you will have heard it all in Coldplay's back-catalogue.

Rather than inspired musical intervention, notable guest appearances from none other than Barack Obama and Beyonce only prove the type of pulling power Coldplay has.

• Coldplay. A Head Full of Dreams. Parlophone.

Two and a half stars (out of five)

Single download: Birds
For those who like: U2, James Blunt
