CD reviews: David Bowie

This attempt to serve up David Bowie's considerable recorded output as a one-sitting banquet won't be the last, but at 59 songs running in reverse chronological order it is an extended degustation worth setting an afternoon aside for.

Beginning with the sprawling and sombre new jazz track Sue (Or A Season Of Crime), the collection counts down to Liza Jane, Bowie's R&B-rock debut as Davie Jones, taking in most of the expected high points and some of the low, including the much-lampooned Jagger duet Dancing In The Street.

A diversion around early-'90s hard-rock outfit Tin Machine is understandable.
