CD reviews: Day of the Dead

A tribute album of Grateful Dead covers put together by the Dessner brothers of The National and worked into a massive (59 tracks) compilation that is defined by its consistent quality.

Among no end of highlights, here are just a few: The War On Drugs' taut but laid-back version of Touch of Grey; Portland-based Unknown Mortal Orchestra (Kiwi Ruban Nielson's project) doing a Prince-meets-Odelay-era-Beck on Shakedown Street; Bela Fleck's dusty, banjo-driven Help Is On The Way; Wilco's fluid live rendition of St Stephen; and Lucinda Williams' lurching, slacker delivery on Going Down the Road Feeling Bad.

The take-home message?

Jerry Garcia and company sure penned some fine songs.
