CD reviews: Glass Animals

Oxford, the  university town that spawned Radiohead, is also home to Glass Animals, an outfit that has, arguably, updated a rare musical crossbreed.

Part thinking person’s pop, part hands-in-the-air arena chant, part late-night naval-gazing, their sophomore album is  well named given the use of secret recordings with relative strangers.

The result is an album rooted in lyrical reality via its characters, yet almost fantastical in its musical textures.

Found-sound sample loops bump and grind against video game bleeps, soulful vocal crooning and the gritty grooves of hip-hop.
