CD reviews: Kwabs

Twenty-five-year-old Kwabena Adjepong enters the Soulman Olympiad with his copy of the R&B vocal playbook (read: as many ''ooh yeahs'' and ''ba-beh-hees'' as one can muster) firmly in hand.

Yet musically, his debut, at turns drowsy, heartfelt and melodic, echoes the likes of avant-garde crooners The Weeknd and Frank Ocean.

There's plenty here to put him among such company: subtly deployed electronica and a serpentine baritone coiling around songs of small-hours enigma (Forgiven), as well as a beguiling mix of haunting torch songs (Cheating on Me) and primal power pop, as showcased on Spotify-stuttering single Walk.

Kwabs. Love + War. Warner Music.

Three stars (out of five)

Single download: Forgiven
For those who like: The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, James Blake
