CD reviews: Matt Langley

Comprising eight songs, the third album from Broad Bay troubadour Matt Langley is succinct in more ways than one: it is an exercise in editing, the sharp honing of its lyrics matching its deft and dexterous songwriting.

It is also a reminder of the power of simplicity as Langley largely eschews overdubs and layers and focuses on a one-take approach that brings to light all the nuances of his singing and guitar work.

Winterdust begs to be  heard in its entirety as it unfolds from the sheen of opener Brave Violet, to the warm tones and self-observation of Delicate Sun, to the close harmonic shifts of Always Tomorrow and on, its  moods augmented by Alex Vaatstra’s sympathetic string arrangements.
